An over two thousand year old ancient rampart in central China’s Hunan province has been restored after it was demolished early last century.Reconstruction of the Yuezhou ancient rampart in city Yueyang, Hunan province, finished recently and should prove another popular attraction along the banks of the Dongting Lake, one of China’s biggest inland fresh water lakes, the official Xinhua news agency reported Thursday.
Located in the famous Yueyang Pagoda scenic area of the city, the Yuezhou rampart is 1, 200 metres long and 18 metres tall. It includes 400 arrow crenels and three watch towers.
First built during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period (770B.C. – 221B.C.), the Yuezhou ancient rampart was unfortunately demolished in early 20th century only to ease congestion as the city expanded.
Sometimes the ‘progress’ and ‘growth’ in China is made by stepping backwards.
