“Are We There Yet?”

Today, we can identify the people groups that remain untouched by the Gospel. For the first time, it is conceivable that all people groups can be reached in the coming years with a Gospel presence. According to IMB’s 2009 statistical data* there were 506,019 baptisms, 204,192 churches. Church membership overseas was at 10.7 million, and there were 24,650 new churches.

Yes, there is still a long way to go, but progress is being made every day.

Now is the time to also take a fresh look at the challenges ahead and be ready to finish the task. With 45,560 churches in the Southern Baptist Convention, there is much work to be done.

Here’s a global snapshot of the work ahead of us:
  • 4,743 people groups are not engaged at all with the Gospel
  • 6,426 unreached people groups (those with less than 2 percent of people who profess to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ)
  • 1.7 billion with little or no access to the Gospel
  • 1.5 billion Muslims – 22 percent of the world’s population
  • 950 million Hindus in the world
  • Christian witness among China cities less than 1 percent
  • 3 percent evangelical believers among Ethiopia’s 82 million people
  • 355 million in South America do not know Christ
  • Less than 1 percent Christian among more than 270 million living in the Central Asia region
  • 650,000 Lezghi in the Causcasus Mountains fear evil spirits
  • 97 percent of all Palestinians are Muslim
  • 89 percent of North African and Middle Eastern people groups are unreached
  • 311 people groups in India have no known evangelical believers
  • Only 1,600 believers among 1.6 million Muong of Northern Vietnam
A little overwhelming isn’t it?
The task is doable, but it will take all of us – our churches, our missionaries, our national partners, our Great Commission partners.
Are we there yet? Not quite. But we’re on our way.

January Pray4Yueyang Calendar

The January Prayer Calendar for the people of Yueyang, China is available for viewing and download. Please take a minute to download this month’s calendar and to print it out and post somewhere where you will be reminded daily to pray for the people of Yueyang!

December was a great month for the sharing of the Gospel in Yueyang.  Because of Christmas, many believers had the opportunity to explain the holiday that the secular world tries to say is about a fat, bearded man with a red suit and a sleigh…  We know first-hand of dozens of new believers that believed as a direct result of Christmas outreach events as well as just personal sharing with friends and family!

The Chinese acknowledge Christmas, but they don’t really celebrate it ‘big’ like Americans do.  The big holiday for them in Chinese New Year, which this year is in February.  Please be in prayer for Christians who are preparing this month for large scale outreach efforts that will take place over CNY.

Due to an unforeseen upgrade ‘requirement’ with the software we use to update the Pray4Yueyang website (not the blog – that will remain the same) that we just cannot afford, the way that the site looks and is used will most certainly change in the near future.  We are not exactly sure how things will change, but we appreciate your patience as we figure things out!

I Am Lottie Moon

Many years ago, God used an obedient servant named “Lottie” to establish a legacy of sacrificial obedience for the sake of the Kingdom. Today we recognize and celebrate that legacy as a new generation of “Lottie Moons” demonstrate sacrificial obedience as they bring the gospel to those who have never heard.

December-2009

December is a busy month for most people and it’s easy to let life’s daily demands steal the time you would normally spend in prayer for the lost around the world.  We want you to know how much we appreciate every minute of prayer you spend on behalf of the people of Yueyang!  We know it’s not easy and we greatly value the time you invest.

This month is not only a busy time for you, it’s a busy time for believers in China as well.  The people of Yueyang do not officially celebrate Christmas, but they are aware that much of the world is celebrating.  This provides a great opportunity for Christians all across the city to naturally share their faith with their family, friends and co-workers.  As you might expect, this also means that spiritual warfare gets stepped up at the same time, the evil one is NOT happy when Christians obediently and boldly share their faith.

Please pray for believers in Yueyang during the month of December!  Eternity is at stake for 1.5 million lost souls.

July Pray4Yueyang Calendar

July-2009The July Prayer Calendar for the people of Yueyang, China is available for viewing and download. Please take a minute to download this month’s calendar and to print it out and post somewhere where you will be reminded daily to pray for the people of Yueyang!

The month of July in China begins with the celebration of the Anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (中国共产党诞辰).

The Communist Party of China (CPC), also known as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is the founding and the ruling political party of the People’s Republic of China and the world’s largest political party. The Communist Party of China was founded in 1921, and came to rule all of mainland China after defeating its rival the Kuomintang (KMT) in the Chinese Civil War. The party’s 70 million members constitute 5.5% of the total population of mainland China.

By many estimates, there are more Christians in China (approx 100 Million) than there are Communists Party Members. However, the CCP holds a tight grip on every aspect of life for China’s 1.3 Billion citizens. Please pray for all 70 million members of China’s Communist Party. Ask that those who already have a faith in Christ will live out their faith with bold obedience and that those who do not believe will at least have a chance to hear the gospel explained fairly and clearly in a manner in which they can understand.

Giving Sacrificially During the Economic Crisis

During the Great Depression, George Beverly Shea was offered a career in popular music. But an inner voice whispered a greater purpose. The answer came in a poem Shea later set to music, I’d Rather Have Jesus. As we face one of the most difficult economic challenges since the Depression, this hymn reminds us that choosing Christ “rather … than silver or gold” is the most reliable investment advice we will ever find. As markets fluctuate, Christ is a solid rock.

Another line sings of favoring “His dear cause” over worldliness. Just as Shea has stayed faithful to glorify God in song around the globe, Southern Baptists have long been faithful to give time and money to help accomplish the worldwide missionary task.

Economic uncertainty affects your families and your church. It also affects every missionary family on the field. Their work cannot go forward without your continued sacrificial giving.

May God bless you in your ever-faithful obedience to our Great Commission task.

December Prayer Calendar is Available

Your prayers play a vital role in bringing the good news to the people of Yueyang and there is no way for us to express our gratitude to those of you who faithfully ‘stand in the gap’ for the people of Yueyang on a regular basis!

While the focus of this blog is to mobilize prayer, occasionally we will let you know about other ways you can be involved in bringing the Good News to those who need it desperately. One of those ways is by giving generously and obediently to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. (We encourage Southern Baptists to give through their local churches, however you can use the link above to give online right now.)

In addition to the prayer requests found on this blog and the prayer calendar, be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit as you spend a minute or two in prayer every day for the people of Yueyang.
